One of the essential skills every dog should learn is waiting patiently at a gate or doorway. Teaching your furry companions to stay put until given the cue to proceed not only ensures their safety but also brings you peace of mind.

Before diving into gate training, ensure that your dog has a solid understanding of basic behaviors such as “Sit” and “Stay.” Begin by asking your dog to “Sit” or “Lie Down.” Once your dog is in position, ask your dog to “Stay” and then move toward the gate. If your dog tries to follow, gently guide the dog back to the desired spot. Once your dog is staying when you move toward the gate, practice opening the gate and walking through it. Reinforce your dog for remaining in a “Stay” position at each step.

In this video, KPA CTP Breanna Norris is practicing opening and closing a gate while her dog remains in the “Stay” position. She rewards her dog at each step: opening the gate, closing the gate and putting on her shoes, opening the gate again, and taking off her shoes. Once her dog waits at the gate consistently, the pair can practice in different locations with different doorways and gates.

With time and practice, you can help your dog understand that waiting at a gate is the “gateway” to a happier and safer life together!

The benefits of working with multiple species

Dog training requires an understanding of fundamental training principles, such as reinforcement, shaping, and timing. Did you know that you can use these same principles to train another species? In fact, training another species will hone your observation skills and sharpen your mechanics, ultimately helping you become a more skilled and effective dog trainer. So why not broaden your horizons and embark on a journey of discovery with a new furry, feathery, or scaly friend?

Students in the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Dog Training Professional (DTP) program are required to choose an alternate, non-canine, species to work with in order to complete several exercises in the program. In this video submitted by KPA Certified Training Partner (CTP) Cheryl Warner, feathered residents of Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, chickens Helen and Gracie, learn new behaviors. In the video, Helen is being trained by volunteer Madi to station on a scale, while Cheryl demonstrates targeting and spinning with Gracie. “Gracie was my second species for the KPA DTP course,” said Cheryl. “This experience was the catalyst for building out a very robust clicker training and enrichment program at Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, where Gracie and her farm-animal companions reside. Chickens are capable of learning all sorts of great tricks! The behaviors in the video are just the beginning. I've also taught walking with me, an enthusiastic recall, color differentiation, walking through a hula hoop, and targeting lots of new objects. However, spinning is always the crowd favorite!“

Have you ever been embarrassed by your dog jumping up to greet a stranger? Jumping is one of the most common challenges that pet parents face—it is also one of the most difficult behaviors to break. Dogs repeat behaviors that earn rewards, and jumping is often rewarded with attention from the person they are so eager to greet. To eliminate jumping from your dog’s repertoire, teach alternative and more appropriate ways to greet people, with four paws on the floor!

In this video, Karen Pryor Academy faculty member Kiki Yablon is coaching clients over Zoom. They are teaching their dog Maple that having four paws on the floor works better than jumping up to get attention from people. When Maple jumps on an approaching person, the person refrains from petting her and takes a step back, so that Maple’s paws can go back to the floor easily. When Maple puts her paws back on the floor, she immediately gets a treat, delivered down low. After a few repetitions, Maple is staying on the ground as the person approaches. Now, Kiki’s client rewards Maple with treats before she has a chance to jump. Soon, staying on the ground calmly becomes Maple’s first choice, and Maple is rewarded by the exact thing she was seeking—pets from the friend.

Is your dog afraid of ordinary objects? Does he freeze or try to run away when he sees a bag blowing in the wind? Does he bark or growl at cardboard boxes, ladders, or brooms? There are many reasons why dogs may be fearful of certain objects, including exposure to something scary during the developmental period, lack of early socialization, or even a negative experience with the object (perhaps the broom or ladder tipped over and startled the dog). Fortunately, you can help put your dog at ease by creating positive associations with objects that he may fear.

In this video, Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Certified Training Partner (CTP) Charissa Carvell and her dog, Bailey, demonstrate how to create positive associations with the “Say Hi” game. During the game, the dog learns to step toward the scary object, sniff, and then come back to you.

Training Steps:

  1. Set up the object at a safe distance from your dog. The first time you play the game, choose an object that won’t be too scary. In this video, the object is a brown paper bag.
  2. Use a hand target to guide your dog toward the object. To reset, use high-value treats to reward your dog away from the object.
  3. Continue targeting closer to the object until your dog feels confident
  4. As you get closer to the object, change to a verbal cue to “say hi.”
  5. If your dog offers to target the object without your hand cue, click and treat!

Over time, and with repetition, your dog learns that objects he was once fearful of are not only not harmless, but that their presence means good things!

In preparation for the holidays, kitchens are laden with tempting treats and mouthwatering smells. For dogs that are tall or athletic enough to reach a counter, the opportunity to help themselves can be too good to pass up! 

The first step in preventing counter-surfing is removing temptation by blocking off access to the kitchen or keeping the counters clear of any food items. However, since managing the environment is not always possible, it is helpful to teach physically incompatible habits such as the “go to place” behavior. In this video, KPA CTP Chelsea Murray is rewarding her dog for relaxing in a designated area of the kitchen. It won’t take her dog long to learn that no matter what is happening in the kitchen, staying relaxed is a much easier way to earn treats than jumping up on the counters!

Does your dog settle easily at home but overly excitable in new places? That’s because it’s easier to offer calm behavior at home, where the environment is familiar, than in the big, busy world. However, with some patience and training, you can make visits to public spaces more enjoyable for both of you.

In this video, KPA CTP Lauren Kelley and her dog Gracie demonstrate how to teach your dog to generalize calm behavior to public spaces. First, Lauren ensured that Gracie had a strong understanding of the “settle” and “okay” at home. Once Lauren was confident that Gracie could offer these behaviors at home fluently, they were ready for a trip to their local pet store. To prepare Gracie for the pet store, Lauren and Gracie practice calm behavior in the car and, when ready, the parking lot. She breaks down the criteria for calm behavior into small pieces, rewarding Gracie for settle, release from settle, offering attention with and without distractions, and loose-leash walking. Lauren and Gracie weren’t quite ready to go into the pet store in this video, but with continued practice they will be venturing out with joy and confidence!

Are your daily walks more like scavenger hunts for your dog? Food and garbage on the ground are often irresistible distractions for many dogs, but these distractions can result in an emergency vet visit. Teaching your dog to control his/her impulses and “Leave It” will help you keep your dog safe, no matter what “treasures” await!

In this video, KPA CTP Hannah Halpern demonstrates how she taught her scavenging-loving dog, Portlee, to Leave It. Portlee is hard-of-hearing, so when he becomes distracted by an object on the ground, Hannah claps her hands or pats her leg to get Portlee’s attention. As soon as Portlee offers eye contact, Hannah rewards him with a treat. Once Portlee is leaving objects on the ground consistently, Hannah transfers the clapping into the cue for Leave It. Now when Portlee hears a clap, he turns away from the distraction and toward Hannah; she marks that decision with a thumbs up and reinforces with a treat. Hannah and Portlee now enjoy their walks together without worrying about hazardous objects!

what is clicker training?

If you have a dog, you have probably heard of clicker training. But what is it exactly? Is clicker training right for you and your dog? 

Clicker training, or marker-based training, is a form of positive reinforcement-based training that focuses on marking the behavior you like and reinforcing it, rather than focusing on the behavior you don't like. Desirable behavior is usually marked using a clicker, a mechanical device that makes a short, distinct "click" sound that tells the animal exactly when it is doing the right thing. The click is followed by something that the animal finds reinforcing (i.e., food treats). This technique is based on the science of how animals learn, which shows that a dog—or any animal, for that matter—is more likely to learn and repeat actions that result in consequences it desires and enjoys. Clicker training also enables training of behaviors that would be extremely difficult, or even impossible, to train any other way.

KPA CTP Damelle Morgan, Sr. and his dog Warrior demonstrate how clicker training is an effective, safe, humane, and fun way to teach any animal any behavior that it is physically and mentally capable of doing!

As the weather gets colder, your dog may need protective clothing, like a sweater or coat. Many small dogs have difficulty retaining body heat, and senior dogs are prone to underlying medical conditions that may make them more sensitive to the cold, including arthritis. Many rescue dogs come from warmer climates and need help acclimating to colder weather. However, while dogs may benefit from wearing a coat, they may not enjoy wearing one!

The good news is that you can teach your dog to enjoy wearing a coat… or at least to “warm up” to the idea! In this video, KPA CTP Breanna Norris is teaching her dog Robin to wear a jacket. Breanna begins by showing Robin the coat and offering plenty of his favorite training treats. The goal is for Robin to associate the presence of the coat with good things. Over time, Breanna uses small approximations until she can place the coat’s opening near Robin’s head. As demonstrated in the video, Breanna then uses a behavior that Robin knows well—hand-targeting—to teach Robin to place his head through the coat’s opening. Robin is now ready for the arrival of winter (even if the rest of us are not!).
