Many dogs are anxious about receiving husbandry care—especially if they find new experiences scary or if they have had a bad experience in the past. The good news is that by training low-stress handling at home, you can reduce or alleviate your dog’s fear about receiving veterinary and grooming care.

In this video, Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Certified Training Partner (CTP) Sarah Rodriguez demonstrates how to teach a dog to accept brushing. Before you begin brushing, let your dog investigate the brush, clicking/treating for any interaction. Once your dog is comfortable with the presence of the brush, you can begin by lightly touching the brush to your dog’s body. Follow with a high-value treat. When your dog is calm and relaxed with light contact, begin lightly brushing your dog’s fur, keeping sessions short and always following a session with a treat. Over time, you can increase the duration and expectations of the brushing session gradually.

If you and your dog find nail trimming stressful, you are not alone. Nail trimming is one of those necessary but dreaded tasks that many pet owners prefer to hand over to professionals. However, with a little patience and a lot of positive reinforcement, trimming your dog’s nails is not only possible, but enjoyable! The key is to introduce each step gradually and offer lots of positive reinforcement. Having a place for your dog to settle, such as a platform or mat, is helpful as well (see Teach Settle on a Mat).

In this video, you’ll see how to get your dog comfortable with paw handling and then acquainted with the sight, sound, and, ultimately, the feel of the nail clippers. Happy trimming!

A nail Dremel is a great alternative to use with dogs that hate having their nails clipped by guillotine-style clippers, although the noise it makes takes some getting used to. In this video, Ken Ramirez and his dog Marlin demonstrate how to introduce your dog to a Dremel and train for stress-free nail trims!

Prior to this video, Ken and Marlin had worked on voluntary paw touches with the Dremel. Ken takes some time reminding Marlin, using easy approximations. In just a short time they are able to pick up where they left off. Look how comfortable Marlin is offering his paw for nail maintenance!
