We eagerly anticipate the positive transformations that these scholarship winners will bring to the lives of animals through their enrollment in and completion of the Shelter Training & Enrichment course.”

The 2023 Zoe Shelter Scholarship recipients are:

Image

Sydney Colvin, Austin Animal Center, Austin, Texas

Sydney Colvin is the Enrichment Specialist at Austin Animal Center in Texas. While the shelter is large, with 120 staff members and hundreds of volunteers, Sydney is the only person working on animal enrichment—and her position is part-time! Sydney has ambitious goals that she believes the KPA Shelter Training & Enrichment course will allow her to achieve, including expanding the implementation of life-changing routines for longer-stay dogs and programs that make new-to-the-shelter dogs more adoptable. She also hopes to persuade the shelter’s leadership team and the city of Austin to increase investment in the shelter (and make her own role fulltime!), based on what Sydney calls “the weight and value of her KPA education and knowledge.” Emphasizing the many positives of advanced enrichment and opportunities for shelter animals to express themselves in healthy and safe ways, reducing negative interactions, Sydney is passionate about building a framework that works to meet the emotional and mental health needs of the animals in the shelter’s care.

Image

Stasia Orlowski, South Bend Animal Resource Center, South Bend, Indiana

Stasia Orlowski is the Animal Welfare Assistant at the South Bend Animal Resource Center in Indiana. She hopes that the KPA Shelter Training & Enrichment course will help her realize her multiple goals: making shelter stays more pleasant for the animals in her care, implementing strategies for keeping animals busy and content generally (and teaching those strategies to adopters!), and sharing what she learns with her coworkers and the shelter’s volunteers. While the shelter staff members implement some enrichment strategies currently, including one-on-one play, Kongs, and simple behavior training like feet on the floor and quiet attention, Stasia is excited to expand on those efforts, especially with dogs that display problem behaviors. “I would love to be able to make our dogs more adoptable and to offer tips to adopters. What I learn during the course will let me help people get off on the right foot and bond with their newly adopted dogs.”

Image

Arianna Papadopoulos, Scottish SPCA, West Dumbartonshire, UK

At the Scottish SPCA, Arianna Papadopoulos and other shelter staff members work hard to train the dogs in their care, as many of the untrained or mistreated animals present challenging behavior. Training helps the dogs adjust to both life in a kennel and veterinary care, and mitigates reactivity. Arianna is also looking for new ways to provide enrichment to the dogs; the often-inclement weather and the large volume of dogs necessitate inventive ways to keep the dogs distracted and busy. Arianna explains that, sadly, “most of the dogs only get out once a day” since staff resources are thin. “We are often stuck for enrichment ideas and default to Kongs and LickiMats.” The shelter’s goal is rehoming dogs as quickly as possible so that Arianna and others do not feel like they are “failing” healthy dogs whose behavior worsens the longer they remain at the shelter. Arianna hopes that the KPA Shelter Training & Enrichment course will provide “new ideas and insight about the best enrichment for specific behavior, including heavy/destructive chewing.”

Image

Stefanie Pickerd, Lander Pet Connection, Lander, Wyoming

Stefanie Pickerd, mom, pet owner, and animal care technician at Lander Pet Connection (LPC) in Wyoming, is the new volunteer coordinator at the shelter and rescue center. From October 2022 to October 2023, the shelter staff rehomed 799 pets successfully! Stefanie is especially eager to enroll in the KPA Shelter Training & Enrichment course to assist the many animals that come into LPC with trauma. “They can't tell us what they need so we have to try to read their behaviors to help them. I would really like to be able to read them a bit better.” Stefanie looks forward to sharing what she learns in the KPA course with colleagues at weekly meetings where staff share observations about the animals in their care as well as any extra insights or knowledge they have obtained. “We are always learning!”

Image

YuHwa Su, Sanzhi District Animal Shelter & Banqiao District Animal Shelter, New Taipei City, Taiwan

YuHwa Su is a longtime visitor to and volunteer trainer at several shelters in New Taipei City, Taiwan, including Sanzhi District Animal Shelter & Banqiao District Animal Shelter. S/he offers the many stray dogs, as well as the stressed and overworked employees and volunteers at the shelters, hope and encouragement, building positive dog-human relationships, teaching dogs cooperative behaviors, and offering enrichment activities. YuHwa is excited about the Shelter Training & Enrichment course, saying “I hope to gain knowledge and tools from the course, and from other international shelters, to improve the lives of shelter dogs.” S/he believes that if people understand dog behavior and know how to interact with dogs in low-stress ways, positive changes can be made in daily activities like dog-walking and in challenging situations like aggressive behavior, as well as in pre-adoption training.

Image

Jessica White, St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services, Lacombe, Louisiana

Jessica White, the Community Cat Program Manager at the St. Tammany Parish Government Department of Animal Services, is eager to learn more about improving the lives of the animals she works with at the Louisiana shelter. A former animal control officer and kennel technician, Jessica knows that the KPA Shelter Training & Enrichment course will be significant professional-level support for her belief about the importance of enrichment in animal health. Her goals are to spread knowledge about the value of enrichment to animals in rescue environments and to find the best outcomes for each cat that comes through her facility. “We currently do not provide any formal enrichment activities, although I try to encourage kennel techs to at least put toys in the cages.” Completing the Shelter & Enrichment course will help Jessica help the cats maintain and improve their overall health. “I’m excited to get started!”

Image
We look forward to seeing how this year’s Zoe Shelter Scholarship winners implement the knowledge gained from the Shelter Training & Enrichment course to benefit the animals in their care.”

The 2022 Zoe Shelter Scholarship recipients are:

Image

Andrew Findley, The Animal Foundation, Las Vegas, Nevada

Former dog-walker and then a volunteer at The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas, Nevada, Andrew Findley now works within the organization’s Academy of Canine Etiquette (ACE) training program. The program promotes more positive outcomes for larger, harder-to-adopt dogs that may lack the training and good manners to impress potential adopters immediately. “When we notice a dog having a hard time, we try to increase enrichment and add more training.”

Recent struggles at the shelter have sidelined the ACE program and directed most efforts toward the fulfillment of the animals’ basic needs. Andrew has worked to revitalize the Training and Enrichment program by involving volunteers. “Our volunteers are excited to help our animals beyond simply cleaning or walking a dog. Enrichment is fun and makes for some great volunteer opportunities.” Andrew reports that with extra hands the shelter can ensure that their animals get the extra care they deserve.

While enrichment is focused on the shelter’s dogs and cats, Andrew is eager to extend the program to provide proper enrichment for the rabbits, pigs, and any other animals that come through the shelter door. “The Shelter Training & Enrichment scholarship will help to secure the supplies and additional training needed to establish a strong and valuable training and enrichment program that will benefit all of our animals here at The Animal Foundation.”

Image

Jennifer Hanson, Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), Palm City, Florida

Jennifer Hanson works within the cat-care department of the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), the only open-access, no-kill animal-welfare organization operating in Martin County. She has had a long association with HSTC, starting as a dog-kennel attendant in 2005 and then working as a canine vet tech. Jennifer has enjoyed providing enrichment opportunities for the dogs, including Tunchi—a dog that, due to behavioral issues, could not be adopted. In addition to providing Tunchi with daily enrichment, the shelter’s trainers introduced him to agility and nose work. “Years ago, before our enrichment program, this dog would have gone kennel crazy.”

The shelter recently experienced a large turnover of staff and has many new employees who have never attended an enrichment seminar. Adding to this challenge is their recent transition to a no-kill shelter, resulting in an increase in animals with new behavior problems and longer stays at the shelter. “It would benefit the staff to receive more training on enriching the lives of the animals while they are in our care here at the humane society.” Jennifer looks forward to the KPA Shelter Training & Enrichment course. Her goals are to “implement what I learn in the shelter’s daily-care routines and share my knowledge with my coworkers.”

Image

Joanne Langman, SPCA Westchester, Briarcliff Manor, New York

Joanne Langman has been working for the SPCA Westchester for more than four years. She is currently the behavior manager. Before joining the SPCA, Joanne worked at the ASPCA for more than five years. Joanne believes that “enrichment truly saves lives at shelters,” which is why her focus has always been on enrichment experiences both in and out of the kennel. She offers training classes (including nose work and basic cues), playgroups, offsite group walks, and more.

Since the shelter recently relocated to a new facility that is all indoors, Joanne says “we really need to up our game” with kennel enrichment. Joanne hopes that the Shelter Training & Enrichment course will give her the tools and inspiration to expand the SPCA’s programs. She also hopes that it will offer ideas for kennel reactivity, which she believes has been “a huge hindrance to adoption at our facility.”

Image

Melissa Webb, Avery Humane Society, Newland, North Carolina

Melissa Webb, assistant manager, has been with the Avery Humane Society for seven years. During that time, she worked in all areas of the shelter. Melissa was nominated for the scholarship by Avery Humane Society’s shelter manager, Charlene Calhoun. “Melissa’s love of the animals goes above and beyond,” said Charlene. “She loves each animal that comes through.” While the shelter already offers daily enrichment for the dogs and socialization opportunities for the cats, Charlene’s hope is that the knowledge and skills that Melissa gains from the Shelter Training & Enrichment course will shorten the time animals wait before they are adopted. “Any shelter can benefit from training,” she says.

We look forward to seeing how they use the knowledge gained from the Shelter Training & Enrichment course to improve shelter life for their animals and staff members.
Image

The 2021 Zoe Shelter Scholarship recipients are:

Image

Hannah Anagnostou, Warrior Dog Rescue, Savage, Minnesota

Hannah Anagnostou, originally part of a foster family for Warrior Dog Rescue in Savage, Minnesota, and now a member of its leadership team as the organization’s Sponsorship Coordinator, is a 2021 Zoe Scholarship recipient. Having encountered and learned from a KPA Certified Training Partner, the rescue is looking to educate team members about positive reinforcement and enrichment after enjoying initial success with some of their adult dogs. “We want our team of passionate dog people to be on the same page regarding training and enrichment.” Hannah recognizes the value gained from the generosity of people coming together to sponsor dogs and pups that are in need and is grateful for the opportunity to complete the Shelter Training & Enrichment course. “I’m very fortunate to be a part of the continued mission to find dogs their forever homes.”

Image

Daniel Jiménez Bellete, Animalejos, Segovia, Spain

Daniel (Dani) Jiménez Bellete, a volunteer canine educator at the Animalejos shelter in Segovia, Spain, is a 2021 Zoe Scholarship recipient. Dani’s goal is to help the dogs in the shelter, some are hunting discards, offering emotional rehabilitation while working on the deep issues of fear and aggression. “I would love to use the clicker but find it difficult, as many of the dogs suffer from sensory deprivation syndrome and are very frightened by sounds.” The Shelter Training & Enrichment course will enable Dani to grow the volunteer shelter community, establish training protocols, and develop longer-term plans for improving shelter conditions. “I will make the most of the scholarship opportunity to help the dogs of our little shelter.”

Image

Costache Oana, Animal Society for Speranta Shelter, Bucharest, Romania

Costache Oana, a trained psychotherapist and now a member of the inaugural Mesagerii Sperantei (Messengers of Hope) program at Animal Society for Speranta Shelter in Bucharest, Romania, is a 2021 Zoe Scholarship recipient. Costache and others in the program are working with 15 dogs, searching for new approaches for solving behavioral and emotional issues to make all of the animals in the shelter (500!) better candidates for adoption. “This scholarship is my gift to the Animal Society team and a thank you to those who trusted me to be part of the program. I am eager to show that fresh ideas make a difference! The scholarship will be a turning point in my career."

Image

Claudia Paterson, RSPCA South Australia, Lonsdale, South Australia

Claudia Paterson, first a volunteer and now a member of the dog team at RSPCA South Australia, is a 2021 Zoe Scholarship recipient. Claudia says that she is always eager to learn more about behavior and enrichment—and about what works in a shelter environment. RSPCA South Australia is currently creating new sensory-enrichment paddocks for the dogs that provide a range of experiences, including a variety of smells, plants, surfaces, textures, and objects at different heights. While dogs at the shelter are already fed via enrichment methods such as puzzles, Kongs, snuffle mats, cardboard boxes, muffin trays, and more, Claudia knows that “there is always new information to learn and improvements that can be made.” She is excited to learn as much as she can from the Shelter Training & Enrichment course.

Image

Jourdan Ribbler , Pets Without Parents, Columbus, Ohio

Jourdan Ribbler, a long-time staff member of Pets Without Parents in Columbus, Ohio, is a 2021 Zoe Scholarship recipient. Managing staffing and other changes necessitated by COVID-19, Pets Without Parents is using the opportunity to strengthen and revamp their volunteer program as they ramp up their reopening. Jourdan’s hope is that knowledge and skill from the Shelter Training & Enrichment program will enable her to both communicate best practices in training to co-workers, volunteers, and adopters and encourage behavior transformations for animals that are often without life skills and sometimes completely shut down. “These transformations make all the hard work, baby steps, setbacks, and stress worth it! I am eager to see the positive impact for our pets and the people involved.”

Image

Mary Whalen, Humane Society of Greater Savannah, Savannah, Georgia

Mary Whalen, the Canine Behavior Department Coordinator at the Humane Society of Greater Savannah, is a 2021 Zoe Scholarship recipient. Mary is spearheading major changes to the organization, having advocated for and initiated an internal behavior and enrichment department to help meet the needs of their animals. While Mary has experience as a professional dog trainer, this is her first position in a shelter environment, and she is eager to broaden her knowledge about what works in shelters. “We have been using trial and error and, unfortunately, have hit some setbacks.” The scholarship to the Shelter Training & Enrichment course will enable Mary to help “behaviorally challenged dogs, prepare them for the adoption floors, and provide surrender-prevention training to recently adopted dogs at risk of being returned.”
