Teaching your dog to tell the difference between left and right on cue is not only fun, but the skill can be handy when you are walking on hiking trails. To begin teaching this behavior, you will need to set up two cones and teach your dog to touch a specific cone. 

Once your dog is targeting the specified cone reliably, you can add the cue “left” or “right.” For the remaining cue, repeat using the second cone. As your dog becomes confident targeting the cones on cue from a short distance, increase the distance and, eventually, fade out the use of the cones.

As winter sets in and temperatures continue to plummet, many dogs will be spending more time indoors. Concept training, including teaching modifier cues, is a great way to keep your dog’s brain busy and help prevent winter blues!

As KPA CTP Megan Ramirez demonstrates in this video, one fun concept training protocol is visual Match-to-Sample. With this protocol, a dog is shown a sample object and then asked to identify that object among a group of objects. Watch as Megan practices Match-to-Sample with her whippet, Legato. Megan keeps the game simple by incorporating only a few objects that her dog is already familiar with. Once her dog identifies each object reliably, Megan can add novel objects into the mix.

Adding concept training to your repertoire stretches your dog’s cognitive abilities and offers a fun boredom-busting activity for you both. Stationing—training an animal to go to a designated area and stay there until cued otherwise—is a useful training tool for a variety of situations. In homes with multiple dogs, it can be essential for keeping the peace. How do you teach multiple dogs which station is theirs? Try concept training!

In this video, KPA CTP Sarah Rodriguez is teaching her dogs to target different shapes. By clicking and treating for targeting their unique shapes, Sarah’s pups are learning to discriminate that specific shape. Once the dogs are recognizing and targeting their shapes reliably, Sarah can use those shapes to identify each dog’s stationing location. Watch this video with Ken Ramirez to see stationing using shape discrimination in action.

Teaching your dog the concept of left and right is useful for many circumstances, including trail-walking, dog-sports competitions, retrieving exercises, husbandry, and more. The skill is also handy when you have multiple dogs and need to guide them in specific directions. In this video, Ken Ramirez is using left and right modifier cues to teach Coral to go to specific crates and stations that are positioned on Coral’s left side and right side.

Before teaching Coral this behavior, Ken taught Coral to touch a target on the right side and a target on the left side. Once Coral could touch the correct target prompted only by a verbal cue, Ken was able to teach left and right with a second behavior: going into one of two kennels. Notice that when Coral gives a response that was not cued, Ken keeps the session positive by asking for a behavior (paw) that he thinks Coral will participate in. He rewards that behavior and then moves on!
