Teaching your dog to tell the difference between left and right on cue is not only fun, but the skill can be handy when you are walking on hiking trails. To begin teaching this behavior, you will need to set up two cones and teach your dog to touch a specific cone. 

Once your dog is targeting the specified cone reliably, you can add the cue “left” or “right.” For the remaining cue, repeat using the second cone. As your dog becomes confident targeting the cones on cue from a short distance, increase the distance and, eventually, fade out the use of the cones.

Can animals recognize shapes? As Ken Ramirez demonstrates frequently, they can! But why teach shape discrimination? Training an animal to discriminate among different shapes is not only mentally stimulating, but the behavior can be a useful tool for many situations—particularly when there are multiple animals in a training space. By assigning each animal a unique shape, or what Ken calls a “name target,” the animal comes to understand which location to train at, reducing competition and creating a more orderly environment.

In this video, Ken demonstrates how shapes can be placed in specific locations, such as on a chair or a mat, to guide dogs to their correct stations. As you will see in the video, the animals look for their name target and go to that location with confidence. Ken demonstrates how he is able to move the mats to various locations, giving each animal a place in any environment or context!

As winter sets in and temperatures continue to plummet, many dogs will be spending more time indoors. Concept training, including teaching modifier cues, is a great way to keep your dog’s brain busy and help prevent winter blues!

As KPA CTP Megan Ramirez demonstrates in this video, one fun concept training protocol is visual Match-to-Sample. With this protocol, a dog is shown a sample object and then asked to identify that object among a group of objects. Watch as Megan practices Match-to-Sample with her whippet, Legato. Megan keeps the game simple by incorporating only a few objects that her dog is already familiar with. Once her dog identifies each object reliably, Megan can add novel objects into the mix.

Lost your keys? Maybe your dog can help! Teaching your dog to identify and retrieve specific objects, like your keys, is not only helpful but can enhance your dog’s problem-solving abilities. Rather than simply learning to retrieve an object, the dog learns to distinguish a specific object from other objects.

In this video, KPA CTP Breanna Norris is teaching her dog, Robin, to find her keys. Robin wasn’t familiar with picking up metal objects, so Breanna worked with Robin on picking up the keys before she added the retrieve behavior. Once Robin was retrieving the keys consistently, Breanna taught Robin to “find it” using his nose. When Robin had generalized the concept, Breanna asked Robin to find the keys in new environments. Breanna reports that “Walking with a dog that can find and retrieve my dropped keys and phone has been super useful. He is a delight!”

Stationing—training an animal to go to a designated area and stay there until cued otherwise—is a useful training tool for a variety of situations. In homes with multiple dogs, it can be essential for keeping the peace. How do you teach multiple dogs which station is theirs? Try concept training!

In this video, KPA CTP Sarah Rodriguez is teaching her dogs to target different shapes. By clicking and treating for targeting their unique shapes, Sarah’s pups are learning to discriminate that specific shape. Once the dogs are recognizing and targeting their shapes reliably, Sarah can use those shapes to identify each dog’s stationing location. Teaching your dog the concept of left and right is useful for many circumstances, including trail-walking, dog-sports competitions, retrieving exercises, husbandry, and more. The skill is also handy when you have multiple dogs and need to guide them in specific directions. In this video, Ken Ramirez is using left and right modifier cues to teach Coral to go to specific crates and stations that are positioned on Coral’s left side and right side.

Before teaching Coral this behavior, Ken taught Coral to touch a target on the right side and a target on the left side. Once Coral could touch the correct target prompted only by a verbal cue, Ken was able to teach left and right with a second behavior: going into one of two kennels. Notice that when Coral gives a response that was not cued, Ken keeps the session positive by asking for a behavior (paw) that he thinks Coral will participate in. He rewards that behavior and then moves on!

For many animals, cold winter climates, the pandemic, or recovering from an injury often results in less exercise outdoors, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression (just as it does for humans!) Fortunately, you can still provide plenty of exercise for your animals with games and activities you can do inside your home—no matter the species!

KPA CTP Jessica Benoit’s chicken, Tiny, has been on cage rest recovering from a broken leg, so Jessica has been teaching her color discrimination. Discrimination training involves reinforcing a behavior (e.g., pecking) in the presence of one stimulus but not others. As you will see in this video, Tiny has learned to discriminate the red lid from other colors. “I taught this behavior just as a fun exercise to help keep Tiny stimulated mentally,” said Jessica. “However, the training has been even more beneficial because I have been able to use it to get her moving around more to help rehabilitate her leg.”

Match-to-sample revisited

Ken Ramirez believes that animals are capable of far more than we give them credit for—when training is fun! For example, animals can learn to identify a specific object among a group of both familiar and novel (unfamiliar) items. This concept, called Match-to-Sample, is one of the must-have core concepts that are used to train broader concepts such as Modifier Cues, Adduction, Mimicry, and even Counting!

In this video, Ken revisits objects that Marlin learned four years earlier. Since Marlin hadn’t practiced identifying the objects since then, Ken was not sure if Marlin would remember them. After just a few sessions, Marlin identified most of the objects successfully! Marlin’s experience is a great example of what an animal can remember when training is fun.
