Have you ever been embarrassed by your dog jumping up to greet a stranger? Jumping is one of the most common challenges that pet parents face—it is also one of the most difficult behaviors to break. Dogs repeat behaviors that earn rewards, and jumping is often rewarded with attention from the person they are so eager to greet. To eliminate jumping from your dog’s repertoire, teach alternative and more appropriate ways to greet people, with four paws on the floor!

In this video, Karen Pryor Academy faculty member Kiki Yablon is coaching clients over Zoom. They are teaching their dog Maple that having four paws on the floor works better than jumping up to get attention from people. When Maple jumps on an approaching person, the person refrains from petting her and takes a step back, so that Maple’s paws can go back to the floor easily. When Maple puts her paws back on the floor, she immediately gets a treat, delivered down low. After a few repetitions, Maple is staying on the ground as the person approaches. Now, Kiki’s client rewards Maple with treats before she has a chance to jump. Soon, staying on the ground calmly becomes Maple’s first choice, and Maple is rewarded by the exact thing she was seeking—pets from the friend.

In preparation for the holidays, kitchens are laden with tempting treats and mouthwatering smells. For dogs that are tall or athletic enough to reach a counter, the opportunity to help themselves can be too good to pass up! 

The first step in preventing counter-surfing is removing temptation by blocking off access to the kitchen or keeping the counters clear of any food items. However, since managing the environment is not always possible, it is helpful to teach physically incompatible habits such as the “go to place” behavior. In this video, KPA CTP Chelsea Murray is rewarding her dog for relaxing in a designated area of the kitchen. It won’t take her dog long to learn that no matter what is happening in the kitchen, staying relaxed is a much easier way to earn treats than jumping up on the counters!

The first step in teaching polite door greetings is to teach a few alternate behaviors that you want your dog to do when he hears the arrival sound. These should be simple behaviors that your dog knows well such as place, come, touch, get a toy, and go outside.

Start by practicing in a novel, safe area. In this video, KPA faculty member Debbie Martin introduces her dog to the sound of the doorbell on her secure patio. Each time she prompts the sound of the doorbell, she asks her dog for a touch. Once the dog is performing the touch behavior reliably, Debbie begins practicing in the house. Through repetition, her dog begins to anticipate offering the touch behavior when hearing the bell. Once her dog is performing the touch behavior reliably with the sound of the doorbell, Debbie cues the next behavior, which is either go outside or get a toy, depending on the situation. Her dog has now learned that the sound of the doorbell is an opportunity to earn treats through alternate, calm behaviors!

Few things are more joyful than unclipping your dog’s leash to begin an outdoor adventure. Off-leash walks and hikes let you spend quality time together in nature and provide exercise, stimulation, and enrichment for your dog. But how do you keep your dog’s attention in the spring and summer when there are so many exciting new scents emerging? One way to help your dog pay attention to you is to teach the habit of “checking in.”

Start in an environment with few distractions (like your backyard)—and have plenty of tasty treats available. In this video, KPA CTP Sarah Kaechele practices the “check-in” behavior on a quiet trail. Sarah’s dog wears a GPS collar as a safety measure, but you can also practice in a fenced-in area or use a long leash. Sarah waits until her dog engages with her spontaneously and then offers praise. To strengthen the behavior, she asks for a recall so that she can pay her dog handsomely. Sarah’s dog is learning that checking in is much more rewarding than following the scent of a critter that may have passed through hours (or days) ago!

Doorways are exciting places for dogs—who knows what is waiting on the other side! As a result, many dogs get overly excited and rush the door, creating a danger for themselves as well as for whomever is entering. Door rushing can be a challenge to manage, especially if you have multiple dogs and your door is constantly revolving. Fortunately, there are simple ways to prevent door-rushing behavior.

Like managing other undesired behaviors, decide what you would like your dog to do instead of rushing the door. Choose a behavior that is incompatible with door rushing, such as sit-stay, not crossing the threshold, or go-to-place. In this video, KPA CTP Steph Folkman chose sit-stay for her dogs, with the goal of having the dogs’ hind quarters touching the floor as she opens the door. Steph breaks down the process into small steps, asking her dogs to sit before she approaches the door. She rewards the sit with a treat and then puts her hand on the doorknob. If the dogs remain seated, Steph increases the criteria slowly until the doorknob is turning and, eventually, until the door is opening. Note how she rewards her dogs for remaining in a sit at each increment. If the dogs were to move out of their sit, Steph would reset them in a sit again and start over. With patience and practice, Steph’s dogs have learned that they have magical power to open the door simply by sitting!

Walking with your dog can be a very rewarding experience for both you and your dog. It is also a great way to strengthen your bond. How do you teach your dog to walk with you? Like teaching any new behavior, the path to happy dog walks is paved with many successive approximations (tiny steps)!

It’s best to start teaching this behavior indoors where there are few distractions and to have plenty of small, tasty treats readily available. In this video by KPA CTP Cari Tetzlaff, a dog and handler are working on the “with me” cue. “With me” signals the dog that it’s time to walk at the handler’s side while matching his pace. They use visual markers (in this case cones) to mark each interval goal. In the beginning, the cones are placed about two steps apart. As the dog and handler hit their stride, the cones are gradually removed until the two are walking a length of 20+ feet together with a loose leash.

For example, targeting is an essential foundation behavior that can be used to teach many useful and complex behaviors, such as guiding an animal to a particular place (into a kennel or onto a scale) or around objects—a foundation for many dog sports.

In this video, KPA CTP Jenny Efimova is using targeting to shape the behavior of going around a cone. She says, “Each time we try a new fitness exercise, I’m struck by how it’s the basics that always come through. Touching the nose to a stationary target and following a target are two fluent behaviors for Larkin and ones I’ve now applied in a myriad of situations. Building strong foundation behaviors matters!”

Being out and about with your dog is one of life’s greatest joys, but only if you have a dog that can behave well in public. Maybe you’ve already experienced the horror and embarrassment of your dog jumping up on a passing stranger as you struggle to gain control!

In this video, Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Certified Training Partner (CTP) Meg Sanders works with a client and her dog Twila to practice good manners in a busy shopping center. Like many puppies, four-month-old Twila loves people; it is a challenge not to rush up to greet everyone she sees. Meg says, “While we love that Twila is social and happy around all kinds of people, we also want her to learn that she can’t greet everyone—and when she does greet people, she needs to stay calm and keep all four feet on the floor.”  

To teach Twila to stay calm in the presence of strangers, Meg’s client begins by standing calm and still as people around them go about their business. When Twila notices a passing stranger, she clicks and reinforces Twila for turning her attention back to her. Eventually, Twila turns her attention back immediately after noticing a stranger. Great work, team!

Does your dog go berserk when you come home? Do you wish your dog would greet you calmly rather than barking or jumping on you? Having your dog greet you (and your visitors) politely is a worthwhile behavior to train—and it’s easy!

In this video, Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Certified Training Partner (CTP) Erin Gianella helps her client teach her dog Dolly calm behavior (in this case sitting) when her client enters the house. Her client clicks and treats when Dolly sits at the door, as well as when Dolly follows her to the kitchen calmly. Note how her client also remains calm, which helps keep Dolly’s excitement threshold low. “Dolly has come a LONG way,” says Erin. “This is the calmest we’ve seen her and I couldn’t be more proud!”
