The benefits of teaching the go behind behavior

Imagine you're out for a morning walk with your dog and your dog spots another dog approaching. While some dogs may welcome the unexpected encounter, others may perceive the encounter as a threat, and react with barking and lunging. If this scenario sounds familiar, there are strategies that can help! Teaching your dog to stand behind you is a valuable approach; the Go Behind behavior can mitigate reactive responses by offering both a sense of security and an alternative response to perceived threats.

In this video from Emma Parsons, Mary Ann Callahan and her Bodie demonstrate the Go Behind behavior. Mary Ann guides Bodie to move behind her by following her hand target. Once Bodie is positioned behind Mary Ann, she signals Bodie to settle. Now, instead of feeling overwhelmed or helpless encountering a perceived threat, Bodie has a clear action to take, which promotes a sense of security. The Go Behind behavior can also be utilized in crowded or potentially dangerous environments to keep a dog safe, or simply as a way to maintain control in everyday situations.

This reaction not only makes it challenging to extricate both a guardian and dog from a potentially dangerous situation but it also increases the likelihood that the dog will become tense and react explosively. Teaching a dog to keep moving can help create distance between the dog and the trigger quickly, not only ensuring the dog’s safety but also providing the dog with an alternative activity in the presence of a trigger.

In this video, KPA faculty member Emma Parsons and her dog demonstrate the practice of moving back and forth. Emma marks the forward movement and delivers a treat in the opposite direction to encourage backward movement. By incorporating this exercise into their training routine, Emma teaches her dog to remain calm in the presence of a trigger and to learn that moving past it, either forward or backward, is a rewarding experience!
